Dialogues on political correctness
The autobiography "I, Rigoberta Menchú" has become part of the emerging multicultural canon on many campuses. The book, a story of a poor Guatemalan woman and her family, is taught in classes on literature, history, anthropology, and other disciplines. But a new book by a Middlebury College professor challenges the veracity of much of the autobiography. Conservatives have long dismissed the autobiography as simplistic, and now they -- and others -- think it is foolish for colleges to keep teaching it. But many professors say that they will continue to do so, either out of the belief that right-wing critics have unfairly questioned the work, or because they believe that the book portrays a greater truth about life in Guatemala -- regardless of whether the events described actually happened. Should the book continue to be taught in the way it has been? What does this controversy say about the state of academe?

QUESTION: What should colleges do about overseas sweatshops that produce clothing with college logos? Should colleges yield to student demands and join the anti-sweatshop Worker Rights Consortium?

Ponderables How The Left Misinforms Itself
"You twist, you turn; you sidestep by using fungible formulations and you avoid vexatious details-all while you footnote copiously. You arrive, finally, at the telos- your prejudgment. You show that anything bad that happens in the third world (or the postmodern, globalized version of what we used to call the third world) must really be the fault of "the West" or the "global market." You show that anything Palestinians do is the fault of Israelis. Complex considerations of right and wrong in Western or third world (or Israeli or Palestinian) politics crumble, along with the integrity of anything that might be called a "left" appraisal of them."
Mitchell Cohen writing in Dissent MagazineGlobal Warming or Global Normalizing?
'...about 300 years ago, the Earth was experiencing the ''Little Ice Age.'' It had descended into this relatively cool period from a warm interval about 1,000 years ago known as the ''Medieval Climate Optimum.'' During the Medieval Climate Optimum, temperatures were warm enough to allow the colonization of Greenland. These colonies were abandoned after the onset of colder temperatures. For the past 300 years, global temperatures have been gradually recovering. ...They are still a little below the average for the past 3,000 years. The human historical record does not report ''global warming'' catastrophes, even though temperatures have been far higher during much of the last three millennia.
'To be sure, CO2 levels have increased substantially since the Industrial Revolution, and are expected to continue doing so. It is reasonable to believe that humans have been responsible for much of this increase. But the effect on the environment is likely to be benign. Greenhouse gases cause plant life, and the animal life that depends upon it, to thrive. What mankind is doing is liberating carbon from beneath the Earth's surface and putting it into the atmosphere, where it is available for conversion into living organisms.'

Now this is what we mean when we say "pro-choice:"
A Florida mom pointed a gun at her 16-year-old daughter's belly and forced her to drive 70 miles to an abortion clinic in suburban West Palm Beach, where she told a nurse, "If my daughter doesn't have this abortion, I'm going to blow her brains out." Workers called the police, and the woman was arrested. "I assure you, she loves her daughter," said the woman's boss, Orval Shelton. "She should have shot the 23-year-old man that got her pregnant."

And, from the grandaddy of them all:
"Certainly, almost everyone now realizes that the Bolsheviks could not have maintained themselves in power for two and a half months, let alone two and a half years, unless the strictest, truly iron discipline had prevailed in our Party, and unless the latter had been rendered the fullest and unreserved support of the whole mass of the working class, that is, of all its thinking, honest, self-sacrificing and influential elements who are capable of leading or of carrying with them the backward strata. "
V.I. Lenin "Left-Wing" Communism, an Infantile Disorder
"There need be no doubt that [the great industrial capitalists] are very grateful to "Left" revolutionaries like...the American Industrial Workers of the World [who] advocate leaving the reactionary trade unions and refusal to work in them. We must be able to withstand all this, to agree to all and every sacrifice, and even -- if need be -- to resort to various stratagems, artifices, illegal methods, to evasions and subterfuges, only so as to get into the trade unions, to remain in them, and to carry on Communist work within them at all costs. And here is a great idea from the totalitarians at the Council of Europe
"9. Legislation should be enacted where it does not exist to prohibit oral or written instigation to racism, anarchy, anti-Semitism and xenophobia; freedom of expression can not be accepted as an excuse for it. Existing legislation should be fully implemented. In this context, public denial of the holocaust should be regarded as an expression of anti-Semitism. Sanctions should include deprivation of the right to be elected to public office. Using the Internet for racist purposes should be made a criminal offence."
This was gleaned from a manifesto by the "Council of Europe." This was point number 9 out of 105 points in this paper.
