5 held over stolen sugar

By John Augustine Emojong

Police at Tororo Railway Station are holding five people in connection with theft of 108 bags of sugar from a train wagon on the night of Dec. 10.

Those under detention include four security guards who were guarding the station and a driver of a Diana pick-up which was allegedly used to ferry the sugar. The identities of the suspects could not be readily established.

The sugar imported from Colombia belonged to a Kampala firm, Speke Commodities. The total quantity in the wagon was 800 bags.

Tororo Railway Inter-state Traffic Officer, Peter Owolo told The Monitor on Friday that the thieves cut the seal of the wagon and stole the sugar. The sugar was ferried to a place called Kisangani along Nagongera Road where it was later intercepted by the escorts of the 403 Brigade Commanding Officer who were drinking at the place at the time.
